Daisy Coles

I began my career at tiny-but-mighty Steele Roberts, in 2005. After that, I worked for international publishers LexisNexis. I went freelance in 2009.

I find good stories satisfying. A good story lives as much within a novel that canters along through new worlds as it does in a dignified set of non-fiction chapters: headings perfectly nested and footnotes tidy, safely guiding readers through an avenue of our history or a legal pathway.

The stories I read to my children are perhaps my favourite. They’re living, noisy proof that story is power: irresistible and made for sharing.

It’s my privilege to spend my days shepherding stories along their very first journey, from writers’ minds to readers’ hands.

I love editing fiction, but I work on a lot of non-fiction. I’m good at turning corporate jargon into polished plain English. Recently, I’ve worked with some of New Zealand’s preeminent judges and senior academics on non-fiction titles.

I also like writing stories. My essays and articles have been published on The Spinoff, Stuff and BayBuzz.

I have a BA in English Literature and a Diploma in Publishing. I split my time between Napier in New Zealand and Mecsér in Hungary.

Daisy, you’re a legend. If I could afford it I’d make an aeroplane fly over the city proclaiming it in jet streams. Failing that – thanks!

My career has always involved both writing and editing. There is so much overlap in the two skills; every story I write makes me a better editor, and vice versa.

The bulk of my editing work is in legal publishing – an area of expertise that I never planned to develop but that I’m very happy to have. My first job out of university, in 2008, was with LexisNexis, which is a valued client to this day.

But variety is key, and I always welcome cookbooks, children’s books, novels, memoirs – you name it. And I have a particular passion for proofreading, that finnicky final step where I can make sure a piece of writing is absolutely flawless before publication.

I have written for magazines and newspapers since 2005, both freelance and as a staff writer. At present, I’m a regular contributor to New Zealand Woman’s Weekly and Woman’s Day. I love getting to know people through interviews and then crafting thoughtful, moving stories.

I have a BA in English and a Graduate Diploma in Journalism from Massey University. I live in Wellington, New Zealand.
